Iron Deposits of the Labrador Trough | Exploration and ...

The Labrador Trough contains world-class iron deposits which have been mined since 1954. The direct shipping of Knob Lake ores were mined at Schefferville from 1954 to 1982. Concentrate production began in 1961 in the southwest end of the Trough, with three mines currently producing concentrate and pellets at a rate of 35 Mt per year.

The Labrador Trough is located in western Labrador and northeastern Québec and contains several world-class iron-ore deposits. Several large coarse-grained metamor- phosed iron deposits (metataconites) are located in the Labrador City/Wabush area, and have been mined continu- ously since the 1960s.

"The Eldor carbonatite complex, located in the Labrador Trough region of Quebec, Canada, is a relatively unstudied deposit. The complex has a ubiquitos distribution of pyrochlore throughout the units, contains REE mineralization in the form of monazite and contains several minerals which would be economically viable as a by-product of pyrochlore mining. Abstract The Paleoproterozoic Torngat Orogen, northern Labrador and northeastern Quebec, Canada, is the result of oblique collision between the Nain (North Atlantic) and Rae cratons. A comprehensive set of U Pb ages allows the chronology of events to be closely bracketed. Subduction occurred below the Nain craton from ca 1910-1870 Ma, and collision …

Geological mapping in the southeastern Labrador Trough indicates that Kaniapiskau Supergroup sediments associated with rifting of the Superior continent (Seaward Group) are absent, where the oldest unit identified in the area is composed of the Le Fer Formation sandstones and siltstones (Wardle, 1979a; Rivers, 1982).

It was previously linked to Labrador Trough magmatism but re-interpretation of the regional geology suggests a closer resemblance to the successions of the Cape Smith belt. We present new lithogeochemistry that shows that the Roberts Lake Syncline comprises two distinct magmatic events rather than the single event previously interpreted.
